Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why do I need it?
Storing data on a hard drive is a very cheap means of backup. However, hard drives are mechanical devices, and will eventually fail, its only a matter of time. CDs only last a few years before the reflective layer begins to degrade, and tapes wear out as well. Having the backup off-site is also critical in case a fire or flood destroys all your computer equipment.
What makes Indy-Backup.com different?
We use an advanced algorithm to check your files for backup. Most solutions only determine if a file has changed, and attempt to backup the entire file every day. Until now, this has prevented internet backups from being time and cost effective. Our solution only backs up the pieces of file that have changed. Most of our clients only need to backup < 1% of their total data every night.
Do you offer refunds? A free trial?
No, but there’s no long term contracts or set-up fees either! With the service as low as $27.95/mo, you can simply pay month-to-month, and cancel anytime you like.
Do I need one server with all my files?
If you work in a small office or home office with only one or two employees, a central office server, while a still good idea, might not be cost-effective for you. We offer a discount for clients that have more than one workstation that need to be backed up.
Are the files encrypted on the Indy-Backup.com server?
No. We encrypt any sensitive data (credit cards, login passwords, etc) using Blowfish, but the files we store from your backup on our server are not encrypted. They’re as safe and secure as any other file on a well-locked-down Unix system, but they are not encrypted. Also, the files are encrypted while we are transferring them over the internet, so your files are safe from eavesdroppers and hackers.
What kind of server hardware are you using to store my data?
The servers are Dual Xeon 3.6 GHz processor Dell 2850s with RAID5 arrayed SCSI hard drives. We also do daily hard linked rsync snapshots to an external storage array.
